title: "What's in a Word? An Introduction to
Finite-State Morphological Analysis and
Generation"

abstract:

Words can be surprisingly complex and interesting structures,
and morphological analysis and generation are key
components in almost any natural-language-processing system.

Advances in theory and software implementations
now allow both the morphotactic structure and the
morphophonological alternations of words to be described
in finite-state grammars and compiled into finite-state
transducers. These transducers are mathematically
beautiful, and in practice they are compact, flexible,
and computationally efficient. Finite-state morphology
has been applied to a wide variety of languages around
the world, including new work on Irish at the Linguistics
Institute of Ireland.

The Dublin Computational Linguistics Research Seminar series is run
jointly by DCU (Dublin City University), TCD (Trinity College Dublin)
and UCD (University College Dublin).

The 2001/2002 seminar series is hosted by Trinity College with the
support of the Department of Computer Science, the Centre for Language
and Communication Studies, the Department of Germanic Studies, the
School of Irish, the Department of French and the Centre for Computing
and Language Studies.
