title: "What's in a word-combination? A model of
classification in multiword phrases and category
combinations."

abstract:

The ability to put words together in new ways is a
defining feature of language. But how are the meanings of
multiword phrases such as "pet fish", "skilful violinist",
"fake surgeon", or "red-headed butcher" produced from
their constituent words? Meaning depends on
classification: to understand phrases like "pet fish" or
"skilful violinist" is to be able to classify members of
the category combinations "pet fish" or "skilful
violinist". In this talk I'll describe a general model
for classification in category combination. This model
applies both to combinations of natural categories in
language, and to combinations of artificial categories
learned in laboratory studies. In natural language, the
model explains classification patterns seen in noun-noun
conjunctions like "pet fish", and in intersective,
subsective, and privative adjective-noun combinations like
"red-headed butcher", "skilful violinist", and "fake
surgeon". In the laboratory, the model accurately
predicts how people will classify items in
artificially-constructed categories and in novel
combinations of those categories.

The Dublin Computational Linguistics Research Seminar series is run
jointly by DCU (Dublin City University), TCD (Trinity College Dublin)
and UCD (University College Dublin).

The 2001/2002 seminar series is hosted by Trinity College with the
support of the Department of Computer Science, the Centre for Language
and Communication Studies, the Department of Germanic Studies, the
School of Irish, the Department of French and the Centre for Computing
and Language Studies.
