title: "An information state update approach to
collaborative negotiation"
abstract:
Using the information state update approach to
dialogue analysis, I sketch an account of negotiative
dialogue starting from Sidner's artificial negotiation
language. I begin by presenting Sidner's language,
including the concept of state of communication, the
stacks of open and rejected beliefs, and the different
types of message that agents can send to each other as
part of a negotiative activity. I then point out some
problems with Sidner's account, and attempt to analyse
why these problems arise and how they might be
resolved. Next, the Questions under Discussion
(QUD)-based information state used by the GoDiS
dialogue system is introduced. Sidner's negotiation
language is adapted to this information state
approach, and I show how some of the issues that are
problematic in Sidner's language find their solution
when translated to the GoDiS information state
approach. I finally discuss how the other problems
might be solved in GoDiS by the adoption of a slightly
different account of negotiative dialogue as compared
to Sidner's.
The Dublin Computational Linguistics Research Seminar series is run
jointly by DCU (Dublin City University), TCD (Trinity College Dublin)
and UCD (University College Dublin).
The 2001/2002 seminar series is hosted by Trinity College with the
support of the Department of Computer Science, the Centre for Language
and Communication Studies, the Department of Germanic Studies, the
School of Irish, the Department of French and the Centre for Computing
and Language Studies.
