title: Reference from a constructive point of view

abstract:

The topic of the talk is that, concerning natural
language semantics, computation matters not only
technologically, but also theoretically. The classical
idea, in computer science, that the meaning of an
expression is given by its computation, and its
reference by its value, can by applied fruitfully to
natural language expressions. We will illustrate this
point by a constructive analysis of the reference of
proper nouns and definite descriptions. Nevertheless,
reference, even constructively understood, is not the
key concept of natural language semantics. It is
therefore necessary to precise the role of the
referential component within a general semantics: we
will give some indications of how it can be achieved.

The Dublin Computational Linguistics Research Seminar series is run
jointly by DCU (Dublin City University), TCD (Trinity College Dublin)
and UCD (University College Dublin).

The 2001/2002 seminar series is hosted by Trinity College with the
support of the Department of Computer Science, the Centre for Language
and Communication Studies, the Department of Germanic Studies, the
School of Irish, the Department of French and the Centre for Computing
and Language Studies.
