title: Representation, Computation and Exploitation of
Information Structure

abstract:

The written paper that is the principal source for
this talk is mostly an inventory of DRT-based
representations of certain aspects of information
structure - focus-background,
presupposition-assertion, topic-comment as well as
interactions between them - and of principles which
govern their computation from NL input.

The talk will present an overview of the structures
which we have found useful in our own work on
information structure and of the rules needed for
computing them. In addition I will address some
problems connected with the ways in which information
structure is used in discourse and is constrained by
it.

The Dublin Computational Linguistics Research Seminar series is run
jointly by DCU (Dublin City University), TCD (Trinity College Dublin)
and UCD (University College Dublin).

The 2001/2002 seminar series is hosted by Trinity College with the
support of the Department of Computer Science, the Centre for Language
and Communication Studies, the Department of Germanic Studies, the
School of Irish, the Department of French and the Centre for Computing
and Language Studies.
