title: A Unified Account for Gesture Meaning and
Expression Meaning in Simple Reference Games
abstract:
A new approach based on experiments and corpora
studies dealing with the integration of content coming
from pointing gestures and definite descriptions
(objects calles "DDs") is given. It is argued that
pointing gestures are polysemous and polymorphic
entities denoting objects or
objects-within-regions. Gesture information and
expression meaning are integrated in a newly developed
syntax-semantics interface built upon an HPSG-like
syntax and a flexible type-logical semantics. Semantic
and pragmatic (Gricean) solutions for the computation
of the integrated content are discussed. The theory is
evaluated against annotated experimental video
data. It has inter alia interesting VR-applications.
The Dublin Computational Linguistics Research Seminar series is run
jointly by DCU (Dublin City University), TCD (Trinity College Dublin)
and UCD (University College Dublin).
The 2001/2002 seminar series is hosted by Trinity College with the
support of the Department of Computer Science, the Centre for Language
and Communication Studies, the Department of Germanic Studies, the
School of Irish, the Department of French and the Centre for Computing
and Language Studies.
