title: Speech in everyday emotional states

abstract:

Speech research inherited an exalted conception of
emotion from psychobiological theory, but has been
finding that it lacks application. We have followed a
threefold project, trying to collect samples of the
speech that people produce in everyday emotional
states; to find ways of describing what that kind of
speech conveys to listeners; and to identify the
properties that distinguish it from speech of other
kinds. Some coarse generalisations can be extracted,
and applied. Refining them depends on larger
databases; more sensitive speech analysis; and large
scale collaborations, particularly with teams that
have expertise in synthesis.

The Dublin Computational Linguistics Research Seminar series is run
jointly by DCU (Dublin City University), TCD (Trinity College Dublin)
and UCD (University College Dublin).

The 2001/2002 seminar series is hosted by Trinity College with the
support of the Department of Computer Science, the Centre for Language
and Communication Studies, the Department of Germanic Studies, the
School of Irish, the Department of French and the Centre for Computing
and Language Studies.
