Title: The Situated Language Interpreter: Natural Language Processing for
3D Environments
Abstract:
Computer interpretation of language is an area of
growing interest in both research and development. The
purpose of the Situated Language Interpreter (SLI)
project is to develop a natural language interpretation
framework for simulated three dimensional (3D) environments.
A language interface to a 3D simulation should allow
the user to navigate through and interact with objects
in the simulation. A framework has been developed that
creates and updates a context model, based on both what
the user has seen and said. It allows natural language
interfaces to interpret the user's inputs, with
particular emphasis on the interpretation of anaphoric
and deictic referring expressions. The central tenet of
the framework is the grounding of spatial semantics in
visual perception, modelled as visual salience. There
are three main components within the framework: a model
of synthetic vision, a semantic model for locative
expressions containing the projective prepositions in
front of, behind, to the right of, and to the left of,
and a discourse model integrating visual and linguistic
information.
This talk will introduce the interpretive framework and
the SLI system, which implements the framework. Time
permitting a demo of the SLI system will be given.
More information, including a video of the SLI system,
