title:

Reflecting on text-based communication and learner autonomy ---
A research agenda

abstract:

The last few years have seen a number of combinations of the concepts
of learner autonomy and computer-assisted language learning.
Frequently, research has been pursued in computer-mediated
communication and tandem learning. While tandem e-mail projects have
been introduced by C. Appel, I will try to give an overview of the
work that has been done in synchronous text-based communication, also
mostly in tandem partnerships. I will first introduce some of the
important concepts of learner autonomy; second, present some areas
where I have conducted research; and third, look ahead to research
that is currently being planned or in progress. In conclusion, I will
look critically at the term CALL environments and suggest a possible
framework for its definition.
