will talk about
Cross-Language and Multilingual Information Retrieval Experiments
using the CLEF Test Collections
Abstract:
Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) and Multilingual
Information Retrieval (MLIR) are concerned with the extension of
search engine technologies to enable search requests in one language
to retrieve documents in one or more other languages. This means that
in addition to the challenges arising in traditional single language
Information Retrieval, CLIR and MLIR systems must take account of
language translation issues.
Recent years have seen very rapid growth in research interest in CLIR
and MLIR, and the establishment of several international workshop
series for comparative evaluation of different approaches. Each year
one of these workshops the European Cross-Language Evaluation Forum
(CLEF) organises a set of tasks which aim to promote exploration of
the challenges of CLIR and MLIR.
This presentation will describe methods and results from our
participation in several of the CLEF CLIR and MLIR tasks in recent
years. The approach taken in our experiments is to combine the well
proven Okapi probabilistic information retrieval system with
commercial machine translation resources to explore the effectiveness
of these technologies in combination for CLIR and MLIR tasks. The
experiments include exploration of both query and document translation
approaches to crossing the language barrier, and issues of merging
multiple document collections for MLIR. Retrieval effectiveness
results from our partcipation in CLEF have been consistently among the
best reported by CLEF participants.
Please forward to interested parties.
