Title:
A Corpus-based approach to Analogy and Metaphor
Speaker:
Dr. Tony Veale
Department of Computer Science
University College Dublin
Abstract:
Analogy and Metaphor involve two tightly-interwound problems: a
representation problem and a mapping problem. The former concerns how
we should represent the underlying world knowledge that is exploited
in figurative processing, and how best to acquire it. The latter
concerns how we then exploit this knowledge to generate and comprehend
analogies and metaphors. I argue that these problems require a single,
simultaneous solution, and that this solution can be found by
attending to how people use everyday language. In this talk I describe
a corpus-based approach to figurative reasoning that acquires both its
domain knowledge and its cross-domain mapping rules from the Google
ngrams corpus. I will show that a knowledge representation that is
acquired directly from language use has the necessary flexibility to
model the inherent fluidity with which people creatively use words.
The Dublin Computational Linguistics Research Seminar series is run
jointly by Dublin City University, Dublin Institute of Technology,
Trinity College Dublin, and University College Dublin.
The 2008/2009 DCLRS is hosted by the Computational Linguistics Group
of Trinity College Dublin, with support from the the Centre for
Computing and Language Studies, Centre for Language and Communication
Studies, the School of Computer Science and Statistics, and the Centre
for Next Generation Localisation.
