Title:

The Information Retrieval Facility and Professional Search

Speakers:

Professor John Tait
Chief Scientific Officer
Internet Retrieval Facility

Visiting Researcher, NCLT,
Dublin City University

Abstract:

The Information Retrieval Facility is a new international not for
profit research institution based in Vienna. It aims to promote and
facilitate research in large scale information retrieval in
intellectual property generally and patent search in particular. The
IRF provides access to large supercomputing facility in Vienna and has
or is developing a number of large test collections and suitable
software to access these collections.

Patent Search is a challenging problem, which is inherently
multi-lingual, often requires high-recall search, conceptual (as
opposed to word-based) search and has a number of challenging
properties. THE IRF is promoting CLEF and TREC tracks involving patent
search as well as a number of European or other projects.

The talk will review these activities and point out some opportunities
for the community in Dublin to get involved.
