Abstract:
This talk will describe a program of research being carried out by the
computational linguistics group at the Centre of Mind/Brain
Sciences. New developments in corpus-based semantic models will be
presented that take more advantage of both shallow and deep linguistic
structures. These models yield rich property-based representations
that are more consistent with those posited in psychology and
linguistics, while also achieving state-of-the-art performance when
simulating a range of language behaviour tasks.
We have also been recording neural activity in people while they carry
out simple linguistic tasks. Discriminative machine learning
techniques can be used to mine semantic distinctions from this data,
and be trained to detect broad categories of things, such as animals
and artefacts. Furthermore, neural data can be compared to corpus
models to learn associations between individual semantic features and
activity in particular regions of the brain. Using these associations
a more fine-grained discrimination is possible, down to the level of
individual words, allowing us to predict the neural activity for an
arbitrary concept.
