Friday this week (September 27), at 4pm, in LB08, Lloyd Building
(TCD), Prof Roni Khardon (Tufts University) speaks in the Dublin
Computational Linguistics Research Seminar on

The big data phenomenon is apparent in many areas of science and engineering,
including for example, luminosity data from light sources in the sky in
astrophysics, measurements of sugar level across patients with diabetes, and
disease occurrence and spread across multiple locations in health informatics.
Many of these problems share similar characteristics - they include multiple
related prediction tasks, tasks can be clustered into behaviour groups, and
each member of a group shares the core behaviour but has some individual
variation from the norm. The talk will present a non-parametric Bayesian
model that aims to capture precisely these characteristics. The model extends
Gaussian processes using the mixed-effects model from statistics, and
captures group behavior by including multiple core types. Inference
algorithms for this model lead to flexible solutions for the associated
regression and classifications problems, for sub-group discovery, and even
for determining the number of groups. The talk will review some of this work
and describe its applications in astrophysics. Time permitting, I will review
additional probabilistic models and application in science and engineering
developed in our lab.
