Friday of next week (September 13, 2019), at 16:00, in room 5025 of the
Arts Building (TCD), Dr Annette Hautli-Janisz will speak.
Title:
Political Negotiations in the Digital Age: From Ex-Post Analysis to Live
Debate Technology
Abstract:
This talk will feature some of the recent developments in processing
spontaneous, natural language discourse in the political realm, starting
with the linguistic properties of this type of discourse and the
challenges related to it. I will then showcase how an interdisciplinary
collaboration with visual analytics allows us to explore the dynamics of
this type of communication on a large scale, in particular regarding the
type of argumentation and the ways that speakers interact and relate
themselves to the discourse. I will then show how this ex-post analysis
aids us in developing live debate technology in ADD-up (Augmented
Deliberative Democracy), a project in which we develop technology that can
track, analyse and facilitate participatory processes, with the aim of
contributing to the success of large-scale public arbitrations.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr. Annette Hautli-Janisz is research associate at the Department of
Linguistics at the University of Konstanz. Her project "Augmented
Deliberative Democracy (ADD-up): Computational Enhancement of
Large-scale Public Arbitrations in Real Time" is funded by the VW
Foundation.
