VACANCY AT PHILIPS RESEARCH LABORATORIES EINDHOVEN, THE NETHERLANDS

SPEECH TECHNOLOGIST
(SYNTHESIS / DIALOGUE MANAGEMENT)

In Philips Research (Eindhoven, The Netherlands) a position is open for a
speech technologist, in particular one who is familiar with speech
synthesis and dialogue management, to design and evaluate speech-based
interaction with consumer systems.

General information

In the research group on User-System Interaction Technology (USIT),
innovative interface solutions are being developed that make Philips
products easier and more enjoyable to use. In particular, natural
interaction is supposed to benefit from the possibility to address the
system in a spoken dialogue. Therefore, demonstration systems are being
built and evaluated in which speech is one of the modalities for
user-system interaction. A generic application domain is the world of
information, communication and entertainment. To make this world easily
accessible for anyone, at any time and in any location requires technically
complicated solutions which, however, should remain hidden for the consumer
because of the intuitively simple interface. Ultimately the devices and the
technology will have to disappear in an environment that responds directly
to human presence.

Job description

The vacant position is intended to attract to the USIT group a speech
technologist who has been active in the field of speech synthesis and
therefore knows the state-of-the-art of the technology. He or she should
preferably also have experience with the use of speech in systems that
combine recognition and synthesis in a spoken dialogue.
The main responsibility of the applicant will be to design, implement and
evaluate speech-based interaction with various consumer applications (in
stand-alone devices, in-home networks, internet services, etc.).
Additionally he or she should actively maintain contacts with the speech
technology community (in universities and in the businesses inside and
outside Philips).

Requirements

- A master's or doctor's degree in a relevant academic area (language and
speech technology, computer science, electrical engineering, or other);
- Demonstrable experience with speech synthesis (and related technologies)
- Desire to apply speech technology in innovative user interface solutions
- Team spirit, eager to work in a multidisciplinary team
