Deadline: February 1, 2001

We seek 1 full-time AI programmer with experience or coursework in one or
more of the following areas; AI planning, natural language generation, or
natural language dialogue management. The AI programmer will participate in
the design, implementation and evaluation of two advanced natural-language
intensive tutoring systems. One of the systems supplements an existing
quantitative physics problem solving coach and the other provides
qualitative physics problem solving tutoring. The common goals of the two
systems are to engage the student in dialogue in order to help them recall
the physics rules needed to solve problems and to resolve common
misconceptions that may be evident during a student's interaction with the
tutoring system.

The primary duties for this position are contributing to the design and
implementation of the system component that generates the tutoring system's
typed natural language reactions to a student's input. The qualifications
for this position are at least an M.S. in Computer Science or equivalent
with training in either AI Planning, Natural Language Generation or Dialogue
Management or experience in designing and implementing software related to
one of these three areas.

Although prior expertise in physics and tutoring systems is not needed, the
applicant should be willing to learn about physics and tutoring physics.
This position is located at the University of Pittsburgh in the Learning
Research and Development Center. It is a full-time research staff position
with full benefits. Salary will be commensurate with experience. Send
inquiries and CVs or resumes to Pamela Jordan (mailto:pjordan@pitt.edu).

Our group is composed of artificial intelligence researchers, computational
linguists and psychologists and is led by Kurt VanLehn at the University of
Pittsburgh. We are members of CIRCLE, an NSF-funded research center that
