TWO POSITIONS in COMPUTATIONAL LINGUISTICS (OPEN IMMEDIATELY)
and
ONE POSITION in WEB BASED TUTORING SYSTEMS (BEGINNING JANUARY 2001)
========================================================================
The Department of Information Technology at the University of Zurich
in Switzerland is soliciting applications for two full-time positions
in Computational Linguistics and one full-time position in Web based
tutoring systems, in two different projects, at the level of
RESEARCH SCIENTIST
1. COMPUTATIONAL LINGUIST (WebExtrAns Project)
QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates for this position must have a
Diploma/Masters degree in Computational Linguistics, or in a related
area (computer science, linguistics) with a minor in Computational
Linguistics, in-depth programming skills in Prolog, a good command of
English, and acquaintance with grammar formalisms. Knowledge of
script programming languages (e.g. Perl), markup-languages (SGML/XML),
and methods for automated terminology extraction would be an
additional asset. A working knowledge of German is desired.
DUTIES: Development of an Answer Extraction system for the Aircraft
Maintenance Manual of the Airbus 320, based on an existing Answer
Extraction system. See http://www.ifi.unizh.ch/CL/CLpublications.html
for more information on Answer Extraction, and
http://www.ifi.unizh.ch/CL/webextrans for a demo.
DURATION: One year, to be extended, open immediately.
2. COMPUTATIONAL LINGUIST (Web-CL-Tutor Project)
QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates for this position must have a
Diploma/Masters degree in Computational Linguistics, or in a related
area (computer science, linguistics) with a minor in Computational
Linguistics, in-depth knowledge of Computational Linguistics,
knowledge of Web based training and tutoring methods, and a keen
interest in didactic questions. Knowledge of programming languages
(e.g. Java) and of markup-languages (SGML/XML) would be an additional
asset. Very good knowledge of German is mandatory.
DUTIES: Development of the contents of a Web based two-semester course
in Computational Linguistics, in German. An existing interactive text
should be re-structured according to the principles of Problem Based
Learning, and appropriate demos, exercises and (on-line) tests should
be designed and integrated with the text.
DURATION: Two years, to be extended, open January 2001.
3. COMPUTER SCIENTIST (Web-CL-Tutor Project)
QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates for this position must have a
Diploma/Masters degree in Computer Science, or in a related area
(computational linguistics, linguistics) with a minor in computer
science, in-depth knowledge of Web programming (Java, Perl) and of
markup-languages (SGML/XML/HTML), knowledge of PDF/Acrobat, and
experience in running mid-size SW development projects. Knowledge of
Web based training and tutoring methods, of other programming
languages (e.g. Prolog), and interest in didactic questions would be
additional assets. Some knowledge of German is desirable.
DUTIES: Implementation of a Web based two-semester course in
Computational Linguistics. An existing interactive text, interactive
demos, exercises and on-line tests must be integrated within a Web
based class management system. The sources will be written in, or
converted into, a (non-proprietary) XML-based format, from which the
(proprietary) format of the specific class management system will be
generated.
DURATION: Two years, to be extended, open January 2001.
SALARY: For all positions, approx. 60,000 Swiss Francs p.a. (depending
on qualifications).
SITE: The Department of Information Technology has 8 full-time faculty

on the Department of Information Technology can be found at
http://www.ifi.unizh.ch/. The University of Zurich is the largest
University in Switzerland, with approximately 20,000 full-time
students (see http://www.unizh.ch/). Zurich is the largest city in
Switzerland, with a rich cultural and scientific life. It is also one
of the main touristic attractions in Switzerland
(http://www.zurichtourism.ch/index_e.html).
APPLICATIONS: Qualified applicants should send (by e-mail or in hard
copy) a detailed curriculum vitae, a one-page statement of their
research interests, a list of publications, and the names of three
