The Department of Philosophy at Kent State University invites
applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant
Professor to begin August 2001. Teaching load: 3 courses (9 semester
hours) per semester. Ph.D. by August 2001 required. AOS: philosophy and
cognitive science, artificial intelligence, or philosophy and computing.
AOC: More than one of the following: (a) formal logic, (b) philosophy
and technology, (c) philosophy of biology, (d) at least two areas in the
history of philosophy (Ancient Greek Philosophy; Medieval Philosophy;
Continental Rationalism; British Empiricism; German Critical Philosophy;
Nineteenth-Century Philosophy; Twentieth-Century Philosophy; American
Philosophy). Other areas of interest are welcome.

We seek candidates with both philosophical and computer-oriented
interests in cognitive science, artificial intelligence, and philosophy
and computing, and who are inclined to see philosophy as a discipline
not limited to or by computational or mathematical concerns. Among other
traits sought are the following: (i) a strong background in logic, both
its history and current development in relation to the history of
philosophy; (ii) an interest and a capacity for exploring CS/AI in its
relation to human intelligence in ways that examine critical assumptions
about intelligence (machine or human), computing, and philosophy; (iii)
a
disposition to work in the area of the interplay between human and
"machine" as thinker; (iv) a capacity for cultivating within philosophy
(both undergraduate and graduate students) the disposition to work from
the strengths of philosophy in artificial intelligence and cognitive
science. We seek candidates who are willing to present a diversity of
approaches to philosophical issues in CS/AI. Candidates must be
interested in teaching and must exhibit a capacity for excellence in
teaching as well as a commitment to scholarship aimed at persistent and
significant publications.

Other responsibilities include: departmental and university service,
including philosophy M.A. thesis supervision and committee assignments.
The department offers undergraduate (B.A.) major and minor programs and
a Master of Arts (M.A.) program. The department also houses two
interdisciplinary minor programs: Health-Care Ethics and Religion
Studies. The position carries the possibility of, but not a guarantee
of, some summer teaching.
