Research Scientist Speech Recognition

Multimedia information appliances, such as mobile phones, PDAs and set top
boxes, are finding their way into every area of our lives. Increasing
quantities of information are becoming available to us all. How can we make
the best use of this information?

Sharp Corporation is a world leader in consumer electronics. Our product
range includes the latest colour multimedia mobile handsets, PDAs and
portable computers, in addition to the underlying components such as
state-of-the-art Liquid Crystal Displays and memory devices.

Sharp Laboratories of Europe is carrying out research that will lead to the
information appliances of tomorrow. The Information Technology Group are
researching novel techniques for language, speech and image processing that
will enable people to exploit information more effectively.

We are looking for dynamic and innovative people to enhance our lively
research team, and help us create ground-breaking software that addresses
the new markets and opportunities opened up by the emergence of a wired
society.

Speech interfaces are becoming increasingly important for consumer and
business appliances. As one of the world's leading appliance manufacturers,
Sharp are in a strong position to shape the next generation of speech-based
products. We are now offering a position for a highly-motivated individual
to drive our program of speech research, initially concentrating on
speech-based retrieval. Together with the core research, you will help us
improve our links with some of the leading research groups and companies in
the speech community.

You will have at least two of the following:

+ Knowledge and experience of the state of the art in acoustic and language
modelling for speech recognition
+ Experience building speech interfaces to applications
+ Experience of using speech toolkits (e.g. HTK)
+ Excellent programming skills
+ Experience of sub-word speech processing, possibly for retrieval
