Spinoza Program Lexicon and Syntax, Leiden University

Applications are invited for a two-year Research Fellowship within the
Spinoza research program Lexicon and Syntax, to commence on January
1st, 2001 or soon thereafter.

The Spinoza Program Lexicon and Syntax (SPLS) studies the
interdependence of Lexicon and Syntax as it manifests itself at the
level of the areal, genetic, and typological relationships between
languages around the world.

The research is organised around the following main contact areas: the
Balkan, Eastern Indonesia, Bolivia/Rondônia (Brazilia),
Benin/Suriname.

In addition, we plan to start research on Sign Languages and are
building a typological database which will contain information on
approx. 80 languages.

The Spinoza Program consists, at any one time, of about 20 scholars,
working on a variety of languages. Further information about SPLS will

Applicants should have a PhD in linguistics (or will have to have
submitted their dissertation before taking up this position),
preferably on a topic related to the research areas of the Spinoza
program.

The succesful applicants will carry out research in one of the areal
teams, on a topic related to the overall research program, and is
expected to report on the research results through conference
presentations and scientific publications.

The appointment will be for a maximum of two years if fulltime.
Parttime positions are negotiable.

The salary for research fellows is max. DFL 7.694 gross per month, for
a fulltime appointment, depending on experience.

publications, and (iii) a brief research proposal (maximally 1 page
A4). Applicants may be asked to submit a revised and/or elaborated
research proposal as part of the selection procedure.
