Project Synopsis
It is common for companies to offer services over the phone via menus
traversed using the phone's keypad. We believe that the Web will evolve to
include voice interaction, and holds the promise of natural dialogs with
Web-based services. Voice browsers allow people to access the services and
information using natural-language understanding, speech synthesis and
recognition. Voice Browsers also offer a great fit for the
next generation of call centres, which will become Web portals to the
company's services and related websites, whether accessed via the telephone
network or via the Internet.
Voice can escape the physical limitations of keypads and small displays on
mobile devices, and offers an ideal solution to hands free browsing, for
example in an automobile. As a supplement to conventional desktop web
browsing, voice offers richer, more natural interaction with services and
information on the web.
The objective of the voice web project is to make this exciting evolution
of the web possible.
