Linguists (English, German, Portuguese)
Experienced project member. Has demonstrated the ability to complete
assignments on time and with high quality. Understands and supports
the product development process. Knowledgeable on the interaction of
linguistic data with software products. Usually works as a member of
a project team with supervision, but should be capable of performing
tasks of limited scope and complexity as an individual.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include:
Design, develop, and maintain linguistic rule system and lexicon for
L&H's Barcelona MT technology. Creates, maintains, updates, and
reviews linguistic software databases and algorithms for the company's
products. Works closely with linguistic and engineering staff on the
development of individual products. Works with project leaders and
quality assurance staff on the preparation of functional and
performance test plans for the lexicographic and functional components
of products. Works on the preparation of linguistic test materials
and analysis of test results. Keeps abreast of the state of the art
of computational linguistics and language aid software. Performs
research into linguistic and stylistic issues relevant to products.
Participates in design reviews. Organizes and clearly presents
linguistic software ideas. Enhances existing linguistic software
components to agreed upon specifications. Maintains (bug fixes)
linguistic components of current products. Develops quality
linguistic software components that are reliable, efficient, and
thoroughly documented according to current specification templates.
Writes limited functional specifications. Adheres to company's
software development process standards.
Position Scope
Liaison
Usually works as part of a project team.
Should be participating in cross-team linguistic and technical
discussions and reviews.
May be involved in cross-organizational meetings in routine matters.
Planning Participation
Estimates own tasks with confidence. May still need guidance depending
on project complexity.
Establishes and meets agreed upon deadlines.
Attends and participates in regularly scheduled project status
meetings.
Understands what risk analysis entails and is able to identify
development risks.
Should be able to anticipate problems and alert supervisor.
Technical Abilities and Problem Complexity
Solves problems of moderate scope and complexity.
Understands relevant linguistic tools for data manipulation,
inflection, and rule writing and relevant concepts of integrating
linguistic data into software products. May provide technical
direction to associates.
Required Knowledge and Experience
Knowledge
Ability to apply principles, theories, and concepts of linguistics or
computational linguistics.
Proficiency in at least one data manipulation language and basic
understanding of at least one programming language (C, C++, Perl).
Has developed some specialized theoretical and practical skills.
Must have nativelike fluency in either German or (Brazilian)
Portuguese and English. Other desired languages would
include French, Italian, and Spanish.
Experience
Minimum of BA in Linguistics or Computational Linguistics with 1-2
years of experience, or MA in Linguistics or Computational Linguistics
or equivalent.
