CRE is looking to recruit a scientist or engineer to perform research
and development under the broad remit of Spoken Document Retrieval.

Job Specification
The post will involve improving and augmenting a portfolio of state of
the art techniques to access speech and other multimedia data. The
successful candidate will work as part of a team of researchers and
engineers looking to enable speech technology in the next generation
of Canon products and services.
Canon is active in international standards organisations such as MPEG
and JPEG which enable multimedia technologies. Of particular concern
to CRE is MPEG-7, which will define metadata for audio and visual
content. CRE has supported MPEG-7 for around two years now via the
Spoken Content Description Scheme, and intends to do so in the
future. To this end, there is opportunity for foreign travel and to
liaise with other groups in many countries.
Requirements
o First degree in engineering, physics, mathematics or some
appropriate numerate discipline.
o Good programming skills.
o PhD in relevant area preferable, but not essential.
In addition, knowledge or experience of any of the following is
desirable:
o Automatic speech recognition
o Pattern recognition
o Signal processing
o Statistics
o XML and XML schema
o Linguistics and phonetics
