The Linguistics and English Language Subject Group at the
University of Sussex at Brighton (UK) is offering at least
one teaching bursary from October 2001. This bursary includes
living expenses (about 7400 pounds sterling per year; figure
subject to ratification) plus full EU fees, for a period of
three years (or, exceptionally, two years for an MPhil).
Those eligible for the bursary are new research students undertaking
to register for the degree of DPhil (= PhD), or, exceptionally,
for the degree of MPhil. Applicants who do not qualify for EU fees
should be aware that they will need to find an additional sum of
approximately 4500 pounds sterling per year (figure subject to
ratification).
The bursary will be awarded competitively. The successful candidate
will be that applicant who is adjudged to be best qualified to
pursue a research degree and who is able to contribute as required
to the Subject Group's teaching.
The successful applicant will be obliged to provide teaching
assistance as required by the Subject Group, typically involving
up to five hours a week in the classroom.
Linguistics and English Language is based in the School of Cognitive
and Computing Sciences (COGS), which offers excellent computing
facilities. Among our research strengths are phonology, morphology,
syntax, semantics, pragmatics and discourse, lexicology,
sociolinguistics, language change, historical linguistics, philology,
onomastics, Hausa language, Catalan language and Basque language. We
can also offer supervision in several other areas.
In order to be considered for this bursary, you must do two things.
First, you must apply normally for a place as a research student.
Information about how to do this can be found at the University's
Website [ http://www.sussex.ac.uk ] or by e-mail at
P.G.Admissions@sussex.ac.uk . Second, you must notify the
Subject Chair, Professor Trask, that you want to be considered
for the bursary. You can do this at the e-mail address below,
which is also where you should direct any inquiries. The deadline
for applications is April 30, 2001.
