**PhD STUDENTSHIP AVAILABLE IMMEDIATELY**
An AHRB fully-funded postgraduate studentship in Philosophy of Cognitive
Science/Mind/Psychology is currently available for immediate start (and must
be taken by February 2002). This position is associated with a three-year
project on Innateness and the Structure of the Mind, and the successful
applicant will be required to work in the Department of Philosophy at the
University of Sheffield, England.
The project is an international, multidiscplinary investigation into
nativism and cognitive science. Participants in the project come from
philosophy, psychology, linguistics, anthropology, primatology and
archaeology, and include many of the top researchers in each field. The
project is organized around three annual conferences, with 4 workshops each
year leading up to each conference. A partial list of participants and a
fuller description of the project can be found at:
http://www.shef.ac.uk/~phil/department/hangseng/AHRB-InnateMind.html
The successful applicant will be expected to undertake postgraduate research
on a topic of their choice related to the project. However, the candidate
need not have a finalised research topic on arrival, and support will be
given by the department to aid topic choice. Given the nature of the
Innateness and the Structure of the Mind project, the scope for potential
PhD topics is broad.
The candidate must also:
1. Have completed a first postgraduate degree or equivalent (this need NOT
be in Philosophy, but should be in a discipline closely related to the
project).
2. NOT have done any further work towards a PhD
3. Have UK residency for full award, EU for fee waiver only
In more detail (from AHRB conditions on awards):
"Research students funded by the Board must meet the conditions relating to
residence and academic qualifications set out in the Board's Annex D below.
Broadly, this means that they must have been resident in the United Kingdom
for at least three years before taking up a studentship; or (for part-time
students) have been resident for three years in another member state of the
European Union. They must be graduates of a recognised HEI [Higher Education
Institute]; and other than in exceptional circumstances, they must have a
postgraduate qualification. Studentships will not be provided for students
who have already received an award from public funds for doctoral research,
or for those who have already embarked on a doctorate, however funded."
