Multi-modal dialogue systems research at Canon (Bracknell, UK, near London;
£30k-50k)

Canon Research Europe Ltd (CRE) has been working on speech technology for
more than 10 years, resulting in applications within Canon products and 3rd
party licensing deals. More recently, we have started work in the area of
multi-modal user interfaces, focusing on integrating speech with other
modalities, such as GUI, buttons, pen, haptic etc. This work is motivated
by concrete business requirements, carried out in close collaboration with
a Canon research group in Japan and synchronised with an upcoming
International Standard for a multi-modal mark-up language. We are currently
expanding activities in this area and are inviting applications from
experienced researchers and exceptional recent graduates for the following
position in the Interaction group:

[SENIOR] RESEARCHER - multi-modal dialogue systems.

Applicants should have:

* Initiative, flexibility and the ability to pick up new skills rapidly.
* A university degree and ideally several years of research experience in
multi-modal dialogue systems.
* Very good programming skills.
* A strong desire to apply research results for developing world-class
products.
* Excellent self-management as well as team working skills.

Experience with practical multi-modal dialogue systems would be a distinct
advantage. A relevant higher degree or expertise in any of the following
would also be beneficial:

* Multi-modal interfaces.
* Dialogue modelling and dialogue strategies.
* Dialogue system architectures.
* Multi-modal grammars.
* XML or XML-based mark-up languages.
* HCI
* Speech recognition technology.
* User interface design.
* JAVA, C/C++, OOD.

The position is currently offered for a fixed term (2 years) but likely to
become permanent.
