Third Sector Research Programme
2002 Postgraduate Awards - Information Sheet
1. Third Sector Research Programme (TSRP):
Research areas will include those aspects of the voluntary or non-profit
sector in Ireland or elsewhere that apply to the distinctive features
of the activities undertaken, including their interaction with state
agencies and
the private sector. Among other aspects it will include
* infrastructure, training and support structures
* definition, history and values of voluntary bodies
* the economic impact of the sector
* the financial basis and fund raising practice of the sector
* the impact of the European Union on the development of the sector
* impact on broader policy issues
* the legal and fiscal environment
* management and governance of the sector
Scope of the programme:
While it is envisaged that competition for awards under this scheme
would be potentially open to all academic disciplines it is anticipated
that the
majority of applications and awards will fall within the broad scope of the
social sciences. The only precondition is that proposals must be focused on
voluntary and community activity. The aim is to develop knowledge, ideas
and theories that will be of use to agencies and the sector as a whole. The
principal themes are the role, defining features and distinctive
characteristics of the voluntary sector; organisational change in voluntary
agencies; governance and boards; Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and
development issues; and community sector organisations. The programme seeks
to improve understanding of the set of organisations located between the
market, the state, and household institutions that are variously
referred to as non-governmental, voluntary, non-profit, or third-sector
organisations, foundations, and social enterprises. These institutions
are part of a wider civil society and form a social economy of
private organisations serving
public purposes. We seek to encourage innovative and exciting proposals
that are relevant to the sector from all disciplines. 2001 Report: see
contact below.
