CHEVENING AWARDS SCHEME 2002

Applications are now being accepted for Chevening Scholarships for the
academic year 2002-2003. The closing date for receipt of applications
is Friday, 18 January 2002.

Chevening Scholarships are offered annually by the British Government
to enable high achievers from around the world to undertake postgraduate
study in The United Kingdom.

To qualify an applicant must:
(a) be an Irish national and be permanently resident in the Republic of
Ireland; applicants of other nationalities are advised to contact the
British Council in their home country for details (addresses of our
offices worldwide can be accessed on the main Council website at
www.britishcouncil.org);
(b) have completed or will complete by Summer 2002 a primary degree or
higher; or have already completed or comenced a postgraduate course of
study;
(c) be in the process of applying to a UK university or universities for
a place in 2002. It is not necessary to have a place confirmed at the
time of applying.

Applicants from all academic disciplines will be considered. This year
we would particularly welcome applicants from the following areas:
POLITICS, JOURNALISM, MEDIA, ART and DESIGN.

In line witht he aims of the Chevening Scheme outlined above the
selectors will seek to identify high achieving candidates in all fields
who demonstrate the potential to become future leaders, decision makeers
and opinion formers on their return to Ireland.

Completed applications must reach The British Council no later than
