The Graduate School in Language and Communication (University of Southern
Denmark, Odense) announces its Summer School programme for 2001.

17-23 June: Workshop on Narrative Cognition and Culture.

This workshop will bring together distinguished researchers in
anthropology, linguistics (conversational analysis, psycholinguistics,
sociolinguistics), psychology and semiotics, to explore narrative from a
variety of perspectives, using diverse methods. The workshop will include
lectures by invited speakers as well as problem-oriented work in small
groups. All participants will be expected to be involved in research
directly relevant to the workshop theme, and PhD students will be
expected to give short presentations, in small groups, of their research
on narratives. Guest speakers: Jan Anward (Linköping University), Michael
Bamberg (Clark University), Rukmini Bhaya Nair (IIT-Delhi), Per Aage
Brandt (Aarhus University), Michael Chandler (University of British
Columbia), Charles Goodwin (UCLA), Marjorie H. Goodwin (UCLA), Elinor Ochs
(UCLA), Dan I. Slobin (UC Berkeley).
Organizers: Elisabeth Engberg-Pedersen (Copenhagen University), Chris
Sinha (University of S. Denmark), Johannes Wagner (University of S.
Denmark).

PhD students wishing to participate in the workshop should send (1) a
brief description (half to one page) of their PhD project; (2) a statement
of their own research on narrative, and the relevance of the workshop upon
their research (200 words max.); (3) in the case of PhD students from
outside Denmark, a statement of support from their supervisor/advisor.

The workshop is open to all interested participants, but numbers will be
limited and preference given to PhD students.

Location: "Kystgaarden", Nyborg Strand, Fyn, Denmark.

Workshop fee: DKK 3.800 (includes materials, board and lodging). See below

Grants are available for PhD students from outside Denmark who wish to
attend the summer school (either or both the workshop and the course
week). Grants cover board and lodging and DKK 1.000 towards travel
expenses.
