MOTOROLA STUDENTSHIPS in SPEECH RECOGNITION

The Speech and Hearing (SpandH) Research Group in the Department of Computer
Science, University of Sheffield, UK has two PhD studentships supported by
Motorola. These awards are available from September 2001, with a duration
of 3
years subject to satisfactory progress.

SpandH is a unique grouping covering a spectrum of research
from auditory modelling through speech perception to engineering large
vocabulary speech recognition systems. We believe that different points on
this
spectrum should inform each other. Potential PhD topics include:

+ robust speech recognition, using missing data approaches
+ decoding multiple sound sources
+ statistical models of prosody, using maximum entropy
+ computational auditory scene analysis
+ recognition of spontaneous speech

The studentship will provide a bursary (UKP10,500 per year) and
successful applicants will be eligible for the University's fee waiver
scheme.
Part of the studentship is likely to involve an internship at Motorola
research
labs in the US (Palo Alto CA) or the UK (Basingstoke).
