Teaching Assistantship (with DPhil study)
in Philosophy and Cognitive Science,
University of Sussex, UK

The School of Cognitive and Computing Sciences at the University of
Sussex, Brighton, UK invites immediate applications for a three year
research and teaching position in Philosophy and Cognitive Science, starting
Autumn 2001. The position carries a full-cost bursary covering full tuition
costs and maintenance at the home/EU rate (currently 2,610 pounds sterling
tuition + 7,100 pounds maintenance).

The successful candidate would be expected to pursue a three year PhD in
the School of Cognitive and Computing Sciences, the topic to fall broadly
within the area of Philosophy of Cognitive Science. The post involves some
teaching and/or marking duties, in the general area of Philosophy, up to a
maximum of 5 contact hours per week (see below), as allocated by the
Philosophy convenor in the School.

In more detail, in return for paying your fees and supporting you, we
may require you to spend up to a maximum of 435 hours per year as a teaching
assistant; that is, a maximum of 14.5 hours per week averaged over a 30-week
academic year. The work is allocated at the discretion of the Philosophy
convenor in the School, and may consist of classroom teaching, individual
tutorials, helpdesking, marking and preparation of classes, and other
activities consistent with the career development of a future academic. As
mentioned above, face-to-face contact with students should include no
more than 5 hours per week of seminars and/or lectures averaged over the
entire year.
