2. Historical Linguistics / Sociolinguistics of 17th-century German, based at
the University of Bristol

Supervisor: Dr Nils Langer

The AHRB has awarded Aberystwyth and Bristol a research grant of £105,234
spread over three years from October 1, 2001, for the project 'The history and
current status of "bad language" as a concept in German folk linguistics.' We
are therefore looking for two PhD students to join the research team which
will be based at Aberystwyth and Bristol.

The tuition fees and maintenance costs of the successful applicants (for three
years) will be covered by the research award.

The award contains provision for the successful candidates to spend two
separate periods of three months collecting data or conducting archival
research in Germany (travel and subsistence will be paid).

Each doctoral student will have access to a computer as well as to office
space.

The Aberystwyth-based PhD student will carry out a study of lay knowledge of
and perception of linguistic norms in modern German on the basis of an
empirical sociolinguistic investigation in a particular dialect area.

The Bristol-based PhD student will be investigating the origins of 'bad'
German by examining seventeenth-century grammars with the aim of identifying
when and how 'bad' German was stigmatised by language users and language
teachers.

Applicants should have a good (2i or higher) first degree in German, and
should preferably have some knowledge of linguistics. Usually, they will hold,
or be about to complete, a first postgraduate degree in German or Linguistics
(normally an MA or MPhil). Further terms and conditions are set out in the
AHRB's Guide to Postgraduate Studentships in the Humanities (www.ahrb.ac.uk).

If you wish to apply, please send a letter of application; CV; all
undergraduate and postgraduate marks available; and names of two referees to
Dr Wini Davies, University of Wales Aberystwyth, Ceredigion SY23 3DY, Wales.
Informal enquiries can be made to Dr Davies (tel.: 01970-622557; e-mail:
wid@aber.ac.uk) or Dr Langer (tel.: 0117-9841; e-mail:
