JOB DESCRIPTION:
Speech as part of the normal interface to computers is the future. If
you want to see the results of your work on every Windows PC, work for
Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products, an international leader in the
development of advanced language technology, including
dictation/speech recognition. We're seeking talented linguists and
computational linguists with the vision and skills to contribute as we
accelerate the development of the next generation of voice-enabled
computing.
The Language Development Department of Lernout & Hauspie is looking
for a Linguistic Developer for German/English. We are seeking a
candidate to use in-house tools to clean and analyze text and lexical
data for statistical language models, and to participate in building
and testing product language models. You will contribute to German and
English language products used on desktop PCs, enterprise-wide
systems, and hand-held devices.
Other tasks include transcription work of recorded speech, which will
mainly be conducted in English. It is therefore essential that the
candidate possess excellent language skills in English.
The successful candidate will be organized and detail-oriented, and
have a passion for language. S/he should be a quick learner, and able
to work independently and with multilingual teams to meet tight
product deadlines. S/he should be familiar with MS-DOS, Windows, and
standard PC applications, and comfortable working with a variety of
data formats. Candidate must be native German speaker, raised in a
German-speaking country. Must have University degree in Linguistics,
German, or related field; an editorial background is helpful.
Knowledge of Perl and/or Python, or other scripting or programming
languages a plus.
Responsibilities include:
- Maintaining and improving German and English lexicons with
pronunciations and part of speech information.
- Preparing and maintaining large volumes of text data
- Developing high coverage German and English Language Models
(LMs), using language model production tools
- Assisting in accuracy testing of German and English language
models
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Native German speaker, raised in German-speaking country
- Near-native English speaker
- Computer-literate with familiarity with standard PC
applications
- Demonstrated attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to interact with both technical and non-computer
professionals
- BS/BA in Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Computer
Science, German, or other relevant field
