POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE (RA) post available for a period of
three years from 1 October 2001 at a starting salary of BP 17,278.00
p.a. (RA1A, PT.4)
The person appointed will be based at Newcastle and will be
responsible to the Principal Investigator (Dr. Corrigan) and
co-investigators (Drs. Beal and Moisl) who will closely supervise the
completion of the following tasks:-
Duties:
-Attend Project Team meetings and assist in the completion of regular
progress reports.
-Conduct two "correction passes" of electronic orthographic
transcriptions of NECTE.
-Create an electronic database catalogue for the PVC corpus.
-Electronic phonetic transcription of audio-recordings from NECTE.
-Conduct two "correction passes" of the electronic phonetic
transcriptions for NECTE.
-Administration, clerical support and up-keep of coding procedures.
-Aid in data manipulation, handling and processing of the data.
-Aid in the creation of visual aids, e.g. tables and charts of data.
-Text formatting and bibliographic materials management.
-Maintain the database.
-Assist with XML-encoding.
-Attend conferences and present research papers relevant to some aspect
of the NPECTE corpus.
Skills and Qualifications:
The RA will have doctoral level training in Linguistics. Experience in
phonetic and orthographic data transcription and knowledge of English
dialects is essential as well as a good "ear" for discriminating
British dialect features. The applicant should be highly
computer-literate and experience with electronic database
creation/manipulation is preferred. Cross-over training in XML and
the specific software packages in use by the research team will be
provided.
