Postdoctoral position (4 years)

CNTS / Computational Linguistics
University of Antwerp (UIA), Belgium

The CNTS language technology group has an open position for a postdoc
for four years, in a new project funded by the IWT, entitled

ONTOBASIS: Foundations, Construction, Services,
and Applications of Ontologies

CNTS is a research centre, part of the linguistics department of UIA,
and specialised in interdisciplinary work in linguistics,
psycholinguistics, and artificial intelligence. The CNTS Language
Technology Group focusses on the use of machine learning techniques in
language technology.

Work in this project will be carried out in close cooperation with the
STARLAB and WISE research groups of the Computer Science department at
the University of Brussels.

The project in general aims at investigating various issues in the
creation and use of computer-based ontologies as repositories of data
semantics. At CNTS, the postdoc will be involved in research on the
application and adaptation of shallow parsing technology for (i) the
extraction of ontological relations from unstructured and
semi-structured sources, (ii) the evaluation of ontologies, and (iii)
the adaptation of ontologies (e.g. WordNet) to specific domains. A
secondary goal is to investigate the use of ontologies to improve text
analysis using shallow parsing.

Requirements:

Candidates should have a Ph.D. and experience in a related area
(computer science, (computational) linguistics, machine learning), and
a proven track of scientific publications. Programming skills are
required. Salary depends on experience, with a gross monthly salary of
approx. 3000 euros.

Target starting date: January 1, 2002.
Deadline for application: October 15, 2001.
