SEEKING: Linguistic Project Manager


Amikai, Inc., a San Francisco company which develops machine
translation solutions, is looking for someone with basic linguistic
knowledge and strong organizational skills who can help us coordinate
a large dictionary-building project for a machine translation system.
The job is part-time (approximately 20 hours/week) and will run for
approximately 4-6 months, starting in mid-November. The weekly time
commitment can vary somewhat, but it is important that we find someone
who can commit to the entire 4-6 month project.

The job will include the following tasks:
* Working with data in a variety of languages to gather terms for the
electronic dictionary;
* Coordinating translators and other contractors;
* Building dictionaries using special computer applications; and
* Overseeing project workflow.

Applicants must:

* Be fluent in English and have knowledge of at least one other
language;
* Be knowledgeable about grammatical concepts, especially across
languages, and common issues in translation;

* Have excellent organizational and communication skills;
* Be familiar with computers, email, and MS Office tool suite;
* Have project management experience or experience working with large
projects;
* Have a Bachelor's degree or 2 years of professional experience; and
* Have legal work status in the United States.

In addition, preference will be given to applicants who:
* Are native or fluent in one or more of the following languages:
o Korean
o German
o Chinese (simplified or traditional writing systems)
o And/or any of the following less crucial languages:
-- Portuguese
-- French
-- Spanish
* Have performed translation or interpreting work;
* Have experience with machine translation software; or
* Have training or work experience in lexicography.

Amikai's offices are located in the Potrero Hill area of San
Francisco. We estimate a 3-day per week schedule, and hours are
flexible. The pay is $25/hour, which may be adjusted based on
experience and qualifications.
