Database and Software Developer

Division/Program: Language & Culture Resources Division/Computer Services

Hours: 35 hours per week (full time)

Salary: $60,000 to $70,000 per annum, FTE, depending upon qualifications

Description of Duties:

Work with CAL staff to develop database applications for projects and to set new
directions with computer applications. Maintain and develop databases and Web
solutions. Oversee database projects of Computer Services staff.

Primary Responsibilities:

Develop web-enabled databases using Filemaker Pro, Access or other
appropriate software
Collaborate with staff to determine database needs and design, develop, and
maintain databases
Integrate existing databases with CAL's Web site
Train project staff in basic database use and development
Integrate catalog sales and order processing system with Web
Work with staff on development of distance learning applications and
multimedia projects

Qualifications:

Education: Must have a degree in Computer Science, MIS, or related field.

Experience: Must have:

a knowledge of databases with expertise in FileMaker Pro, Access, and
Microsoft SQL Server
three to five years of software development experience, including some
supervisory experience.
experience with Java, XML, PHP, SQL and Web applications development.
strong organizational, and interpersonal skills and be able to explain
technical concepts clearly and effectively to non-technical staff.
ability to work in a team development environment.

Knowledge of microcomputer systems support, Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
administration, and LAN/WAN administration is a plus.

Research Assistant

Division/Program: Language Testing Division (LTD)

Hours: 35 hours per week (full time)

Position Available: December 1, 2002

Salary: $34,000 to $38,000 per annum FTE, depending upon qualifications

Description of Duties:
Will be responsible for coordination and research support to the CAST
Framework Project (70%), the NAEP-FL (20%) and the Distance Learning
project (10%). The CAST Framework Project involves entering data into
databases, transcribing tapes, coordinating meetings, administering oral
proficiency tests, conducting research on technology and other duties as assigned.

Primary Responsibilities:
CAST Framework

Entering data
Transcribing Spanish tests
Administering oral proficiency tests
Conducting research on technology relevant to project
Maintaining physical and electronic files and databases
Coding and analyzing data

NAEP-FL and Distance Learning

Participating in data collection, including the administration of a telephonic
oral proficiency test

General

Qualifications:

Education: M.A. Degree in Education, Psychology, Spanish, Linguistics or related
field.

Experience: Must be fluent in Spanish, and have experience in Outlook, Word,
Excel, Access and Powerpoint. Familiarity with FileMaker Pro a plus. Must be
flexible, organized, attentive to detail, and be able to prioritize tasks from several
projects.

Must be available for occasional travel to meetings or conferences.

Research Assistant

(LaL) Division Developing Early Literacy in Spanish Speakers (DELSS) Study

Hours: 35 hours per week (full time)

Position Available: November 15, 2002

Salary: $34,000 to $38,000 per annum FTE, depending upon qualifications

Description of Duties:
Will be responsible for coordination and research support to the Research Core
(50%) and the Spelling Study (50%) of the DELSS study. The DELSS project
involves the testing of and data collection from Spanish-speaking children
learning English and assessing the transfer of their literacy skills from Spanish to
English.

DELSS Research Core:

Assisting in tester training of standardized languages tests; preparation of
testers' materials; data collection, scoring, processing and analyses
Assisting in the coordination of Research Core activities
Providing linguistic or literacy-related feedback during the process of test
development and data analysis

DELSS Spelling Study:

Participating in data collection, including the administration of a Spanish
whole class-administered spelling test, a standardized individual language
test, and other whole-administered tests
Entering language data
Coding and analyzing data using criteria based on linguistic principles of
Spanish and English

Both DELSS Projects:

Assisting in correspondence and coordination with the Project Managers,
Research Assistants, advisers and other persons involved in the DELSS project

Serving as a liaison between two projects, i.e., organizing, coordinating meetings
and summarizing decisions

Assisting in writing and editing research reports, articles, conference
presentations and other project-related products

Preparing information binders for meetings or trainings

Conducting library, Internet searches and other research activities

Qualifications:

Education: M.A. Degree in Education, Spanish, Linguistics or related field.

Experience: Must have native fluency in Spanish and have familiarity with aspects
of the Spanish language such as grammar, phonology and dialectology. Strong
background in young children's education is a big plus. Must have experience in
Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint . Familiarity with Remark
program and FileMaker Pro a plus. Must be flexible, organized, attentive to detail,
and be able to prioritize tasks from several projects. Excellent oral and written
proficiency in English is required.

Must be available for occasional travel for data collection or conferences.

Assisting in the setting up and maintenance of the Centralized Archive;

Assisting in writing and editing research reports, articles, conference
presentations and other project-related products;

Maintaining physical and electronic files and databases;
Ordering tests and other materials and equipment.

DELSS Transfer of Reading Study:

Keeping track of and checking data from the Transfer Study R.A's in the
field;

Serving as the liaison between the Transfer Study staff and Research Core.

Qualifications:

Education: M.A. Degree in Education, Psychology, Spanish, Linguistics or related
field.

Experience: Must be fluent in Spanish, and have experience in Outlook, Word,

Publications Coordinator

Basic Function: Work with project directors to manage CAL's publication
process. Edit publications and oversee their production. Write CAL reports, news
releases, and brochures.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Establish and institute a standard publications production procedure
Supervise or carry out design, copyediting, layout, proofreading, indexing,
copyright application, permission requests and printing for the publications
Do content editing as needed.

Division: Language and Culture Resources

Salary: $40,000-$44,000 FTE per annum, depending upon qualifications

Position Available: Immediately

Hours per week: 35 hours per week (full time)

Education: M.A., preferred in education, languages, or linguistics. Will consider
coursework toward an M.A.

Experience:
Must have at 3 to 5 years experience in writing, editing, and managing publications
processes, from inception through final proofing, and be familiar with the style
manual of the American Psychological Association (APA). Must have strong
organizational, interpersonal, analytic, and writing skills (in English). Proficiency
with PageMaker and other print publication technologies and interest in and
ability to learn new technologies are important. Experience and interest in
education highly desirable. Must have the ability to manage multiple projects and
to work with different project managers.
