NUFFIELD Council ON BIOETHICS

RESEARCH OFFICER (TEMPORARY POST)

The Nuffield Council on Bioethics seeks to play a role in contributing
to policy-making and stimulating debate in bioethics. It has published
five reports on ethical issues associated with: genetic screening;
ownership of tissue; xenotransplantation; genetics and mental disorders;
and genetically modified crops. Two recent discussion papers deal with
the ethical issues raised by clinical research in developing countries
and research on human stem cells. Current projects include the ethical
issues concerning patenting human DNA, research related to healthcare in
developing countries and genetics and human behaviour. =20

The Council wishes to recruit a temporary Research Officer during May
2002 to provide research support to assist the Director and Assistant
Directors in carrying out the work of the Council. This will include
researching and collating materials on relevant topics using a range of
resources including online databases, journals and books, and press
cuttings. The Research Officer will also provide assistance with the
drafting, proof-reading and copy-editing of Council papers and other
publications. =20

Experience Applicants must have experience of research including use of
the internet and on-line databases and experience of collating and
summarising information and drafting documents. =20

Knowledge and skills Applicants must have a degree, preferably in life
sciences, biomedicine or similar, good IT skills, familiarity with a
range of research techniques and resources and general administration
and organisational skills.

Personal qualities

Applicants must have the ability to cope with a full and varied
workload, to prioritise, to work to deadlines, and good interpersonal
and verbal and written communication skills.

Remuneration
The post offered is full-time for five weeks, from Monday 29 April to Friday 31
May 2002. Working hours will be from 9.30am to 5.30pm at the Council
offices in 28 Bedford Square, London WC1B 3JS. The pro rata salary for
the five weeks will equate to =A32,000 before deductions.
