UNIVERSITY COLLEGE CORK, Ireland

Boole Centre for Research in Informatics

Some of the most fundamental problems of the information society are
to be found at the interface between computer science and
mathematics. The connection between these two disciplines goes back to
George Boole, the first Professor of Mathematics at University College
Cork. The Boole Centre for Research in Informatics (BCRI, see
http://www.bcri.ucc.ie) has been established with an award of Euro
5.2m from the Higher Education Authority under Cycle 3 of the
Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI-3). BCRI
invites immediate applications for up to 5 Postdoctoral Research
Fellows and 1 PhD student. Further positions will become available
within 12 months.

BCRI has three thematic areas - Information Theory, Theory of
Computation, and Computing Paradigms. Applicants should clearly
indicate the position(s) in which they are interested. Project
descriptions and leaders are as follows.

Research Fellowship Level II (Prof. Patrick Fitzpatrick)
Structural properties and decoding algorithms for certain classes of error
correcting codes

Research Fellowship Level II (Dr Anthony Seda)
Applications of topology and domain theory to semantics of logic programming
systems involving uncertain reasoning. For full details of this post,
contact a.seda@ucc.ie

Research Fellowship level II (Prof. Alexei Pokrovskii)
Parallel and distributed computing based design of
reliable mathematical models for complex nonlinear dynamical systems

Research Fellowship Level I (Dr Kieran Herley)
Software that combines expert knowledge and parallelism to realize fast
searches in graph theory and other areas of discrete mathematics

Research Fellowship Level I (Prof. Martin Stynes)
Parallel and distributed computing based design of algorithms for the
solution of convection-diffusion problems

PhD studentship (Dr Simon Foley)
Cryptographic protocols and analysis techniques for trust establishment
and management across untrusted networks

The Research Fellowships are for one year initially with possible
renewal for a further two years. Applicants for positions at Level II
(salary Euro 33.5k) should have a PhD and a strong track record of
publication and will be expected to play a leading role in the
research teams. Applicants for positions at Level I (salary Euro
23.5k) should already have obtained, or be about to graduate with, the
PhD degree. The PhD studentship (Euro 12.5k) is for three
years. Applicants should have obtained, or be about to graduate with,
a good honours degree in a relevant discipline, and meet the
requirements for PhD registration in the Faculty of

Science.

For informal discussion of these positions, please contact

Prof. Patrick Fitzpatrick, Department of Mathematics, University
College Cork, Ireland (fitzpat@ucc.ie)

Dr John Morrison, Department of Computer Science, University College Cork,
Ireland (john.morrison@cs.ucc.ie)

Applications should be sent to: posts@bcri.ucc.ie

The closing date for applications is Friday 17th May 2002.
