Summer Internships in Redmond, WA
Fun
Here at Microsoft Research we work very hard, but we also
know you can't work all the time. Well, you can. But
you'll miss all the really fun things to do in and around
Seattle.
Work
Please reference the Current Research section to learn
more abut the various Microsoft Research Groups.
Apply
To apply for a summer internship with Microsoft Research,
please complete the three steps below.
1. Email a copy of your C.V. or resume to
mrintern@microsoft.com. Applications without a C.V./resume
will not be considered.
2. Include in your email two research groups of interest.
See the Research Areas for specifics.
3. Ask your advisor to submit a letter of recommendation
to mrintern@microsoft.com. Your name and ?summer
internship? should show in the subject line. We will hold
your application review until we receive the letter of
recommendation.
Details
What could I expect to do at Microsoft for the
summer?
Microsoft Research interns share the same job
responsibilities as full-time employees. You'll
be given real work with tremendous problems to
solve. As an intern, you'll be working right
alongside full-time employees as part of a team.
How long do internships last?
We ask that interns stay for a minimum of 12
weeks - long enough to really dive into a project
and make a significant contribution. Most of the
internship opportunities are available in the
summer months, but we'll work with you to set
your start and end dates any time throughout the
year.
Do I have to be a U.S. citizen to apply for an
internship in the U.S.?
We'll consider all qualified candidates
regardless of citizenship or visa status.
Intern Benefits:
See the details at:
http://www.microsoft.com/college/benefits/intbene.asp
We take care of getting you here
If you plan to fly, we'll provide you with an
airline ticket via the most direct route to and
from your Microsoft location. Upon arrival, we'll
reimburse you for your taxi fare. If you plan to
drive, we'll reimburse you per mile for the most
direct route to Microsoft.
Subsidized housing
We'll set you up in subsidized housing fully
furnished with the necessities. If you would
like, we'll match you up with roommates, too.
Microsoft will even pay for your basic cable,
electricity, and water. Oh, and we also cover one
more essential: free housecleaning services.
Help with shipping
We'll contribute toward shipping expenses to help
you get your personal items to and from your new
location.
Subsidized car rental
You need wheels, especially to check out the
area.
Bike purchase plan
We give you a choice of using the subsidized
rental car plan or participating in the bike
purchase plan. We'll contribute toward the cost
of a bike and helmet.
Free bus pass
Get around the city with your free Microsoft bus
pass.
Health club membership
Nature didn't intend for you to be swivel
chair-bound for eight hours straight. So we pay
for health club dues at a very nice gym with tons
of equipment in the Puget Sound area and the San
Francisco Bay area. But because Uncle Sam
considers us paying your dues as compensation,
you still have to pay taxes on the market value
of your club membership. Just thought you should
know.
Intern events and parties
Interns are invited to shindigs and special
events sponsored by Microsoft and Microsoft
Research. It's a great way to meet other people
and get to know the Northwest at the same time.
Training
To keep you learning about technology, Microsoft
is happy to send you to training seminars on our
dime.
Free beverages
This is absolutely true. Unlimited sugar and
caffeine.
Free clothing
We make you wear a uniform so everyone knows
you're an intern. Just kidding. But we do give
out quite a few free T-shirts.
Software discounts
Get deep discounts on Microsoft software and
hardware. Interns can spend up to $350 per year
on these discounted items.
Intern orientation and mentoring
During that first crazy week, we'll orient you to
your job and to Microsoft in general. You'll be
teamed up with a full-time mentor from your group
who will show you the ropes, give you advice, and
help you get the most out of your internship.
Salary
Yep. You're paid. But we can't give out numbers
over the Web site. The money is comparable with
other internships in the industry.
