OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY
ASSISTANT EDITORS
As part of the comprehensive revision of the Oxford English Dictionary
now in progress, additional editorial staff are required in either of
two areas:
* updating the etymologies of internal formations and of borrowings
from Germanic, Romance, and classical languages. The successful
applicant will be involved in revising the etymological and linguistic
components of the dictionary text, by researching word histories and
revising or supplementing the existing text in the light of this
research.
Applicants for this post should have at least one of the following: a
good knowledge of the internal history of English; a good knowledge of
one or more Germanic or Romance languages and their histories. A First
or Upper Second class degree in a relevant subject is required, and
some research experience would be highly advantageous.
* preparing entries for English words with derivations from outside
the Germanic, Romance, and classical languages. Applicants should have
a First or Upper Second class degree, preferably in languages or
linguistics, should have studied at least one major world language
other than English, French, or German (knowledge of one or more
languages using a non-roman alphabet would be an advantage), and must
be able to work accurately, logically, and rapidly through complex
text.
The successful applicants will work in the challenging environment of
online publication, which requires the regular issue of scholarly text
from the Dictionary's ongoing research programme.
Further information regarding the revision project is available on the
OED website, http://www.oed.com
The posts will be based in Oxford. Please apply in writing to Ruth
Lester, Personnel Officer, with cv and covering letter quoting reference
02/81. The closing date for applications is 31 May 2002.
A competitive salary will be offered together with a full range of
supporting benefits.
