MASTER PROGRAMME (MSc) 'NEUROSCIENCE AND COGNITION' UTRECHT UNIVERSITY
Introduction
Neuroscience and Cognition in Utrecht covers a large research field spread
over 6 faculties, Biology, Veterinary Faculty, Pharmacy, Medicine, Faculty
of Arts and Social Sciences. This master programme is the initiative of the
Rudolf Magnus Institute for Neurosciences, the Helmholtz Institute and the
Utrecht Institute of Linguistics OTS. Due to the broad spectrum of the
research area the programme is divided into two tracks: in experimental and
clinical neuroscience and in cognitive neuroscience.
Experimental and Clinical Neuroscience
Research in Experimental and Clinical Neuroscience has a broad focus,
ranging from gene to organism, from man to experimental animal, from
ethology to cognition, from microscopy to neuro-imaging (MRI). Besides
research on healthy individuals, patients with psychiatric and neurological
disorders are subjects of investigation.
Cognitive Neuroscience
Cognitive neuroscience is engaged in the relation between the central
nervous system and cognitive skills in men. Research focuses on
distinguishing the various subprocesses involved in mental skills such as
memory, perception or language, the way these subprocesses interact, and on
the nature of the representations in which the relevant information is
encoded. Research on the neuro-anatomical substrate for these processes
requires a number of disciplines such as Biology, Physics, Experimental
Psychology, Linguistics, Neurology, Psychiatry and Functional
Neuro-imaging. This programme focuses on normal function and the
consequences of neuropathology for cognition.
Scope of the Programme
The ambition of this Master Programme is to create a new type of scientist
trained to approach multidisciplinary tasks from their own scientific
discipline.
Outline of the programme
The programme outline adheres to the usual scheme of 84 weeks of training,
120 ECTS. The 2 tracks have their own obligatory theoretical courses. The
courses will be in the format of 2- to 10-week independent modules and will
be organised during the course of the academical year. Students following
the experimental and clinical neuroscience track can follow courses from
the ABC-Master programme.
Faculty:
The faculty of the program will cover a broad spectrum of relevant
expertise from the three research institutes involved. Linguistics faculty
will include Sergey Avrutin, Michael Moortgat, Sieb Nooteboom,Tanya
Reinhart, Eric Reuland, Frank Wijnen.
Career opportunities:
Masters will find their way to:
· academic hospitals (disease-oriented research)
· research institutes (fundamental research on the various areas in the
cognitive sciences)
· pharmaceutical industry (applied research)
· policy- and management functions in science and healthcare
· clinical settings (neuro-psychologist, clinical physicist)
Entry requirements
The Programme may be entered throughout the academic year. The master
programme is open to bachelors of biomedical sciences (Biology, Biomedical
Sciences, Pharmacy, Medicine, Veterinary Sciences), Physics, Linguistics
and Social Sciences. An intake interview may be part of the admission
procedure. Students with deficiencies may be given the opportunity to make
up for them during the Programme.
