Managing Editor, Electronic Imprint (EI)

The University of Virginia Press has an exciting opportunity for an
experienced, innovative managing editor to join its groundbreaking EI
(Electronic Imprint) division. Working with "born digital" electronic
publications, the right candidate will schedule and coordinate copyediting
and proofreading for 5---10 projects per year in the humanities and social
sciences. Work closely with authors and copyright owners to research and
negotiate permissions clearance for electronic publications. Serve as a
liaison between acquisitions, technology, and design departments at the
imprint. Create and maintain copyediting standards, policies, and
procedures for this new medium. Supervise a group of freelance editors, and
designers. Edit online publications. Develop and implement new and emerging
technology for editing publications electronically. Requirements: MA in
the liberal arts or social sciences, or equivalent experience (knowledge of
at least one major European language preferred). Five years of scholarly
editing experience in the humanities or social sciences (preferably at a
university press). Superior negotiation and communications skills, and
demonstrated ability to schedule and coordinate multiple projects
simultaneously. Excellent editing, writing, and organizational
skills. Working knowledge of electronic document preparation and editing,
plus familiarity with emerging digital standards for encoding and
archiving. Familiarity with publishing- and Internet-related intellectual
property issues. Mastery of standard usage and style manuals. University of
