Language, space and action.
The Centre for Thinking and Language, the Institute for Neural and
Adaptive Systems and the Plymouth Institute of Neuroscience,
University of Plymouth invites applications for a fully-funded PhD
studentship (part-funded by the EPSRC), commencing in September
2002. The Department of Psychology and the School of Computing were
both given 5 ratings in the 2001 RAE exercise, and the successful
candidate will join an international team of researchers in the
Plymouth Institute of Neuroscience (which is a collaboration between
departments) examining the relationship between language and
perception from a multidisciplinary perspective.
Specifically, the candidate will undertake a project on the
computational modelling of a range of closed class terms, including
spatial prepositions, quantifiers, adverbs and adjectives, or will
examine the role of action in the representation of spatial terms.
Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a good honours degree in
Psychology, Cognitive Science or Computing. The ideal candidate will
