ITRI, University of Brighton
Research Fellow in Computational Linguistics
up to £26,686

The Information Technology Research Institute (ITRI) at the University
of Brighton is a dedicated research department that is one of the
leading national and international centres for research in language
engineering and computational linguistics. Much of the work is highly
theoretical, but the ITRI is also strongly committed to ensuring,
whenever possible, that the results of research provide solutions to
real-world problems. Great emphasis is also placed on the value of
collaboration - with other universities and research establishments,
nationally and internationally. The research programme is funded
primarily by grants from national and European research councils and
contracts with commercial organisations.

We are currently seeking a Research Fellow to work on a new Medical
Research Council funded project -- the Clinical E-Science Framework
(CLEF).

CLEF is a multi-centre multi-disciplinary effort to manage health
records for cancer care more effectively. Much information that would be
useful to researchers is now inaccessible, because it is held in
separate private archives and expressed mainly in free text. CLEF will
develop tools for a grid system through which data can be extracted from
these records, with due attention to issues of confidentiality, and made
available for 'in silico' experiments for example, on the outcomes of
different treatment protocols. The collaborating centres include the
University of Manchester, Cambridge University Business School, The
Royal Marsden Hospital, University College London; expertise in language
technology comes from the Universities of Sheffield (information
extraction) and Brighton (language generation).

Our role in the project will be to design and implement a program that
can generate English texts, based on knowledge that has been extracted
from patient records, and aimed at different audiences (e.g., doctors,
patients, carers, medical researchers). This program will fit into a
'grid' architecture which makes use of the emerging 'semantic web'
technology.

To succeed, you will need experience at PhD level in computational
linguistics, including knowledge of Prolog. An interest in web-based
technologies, experience with XML, and in particular a good working
knowledge of Java, while not essential, would be a distinct advantage.

The post is fixed-term for 3 years as funding is limited to this period.
