research institute of the Faculty of Arts of Utrecht University. About a
hundred researchers are involved of which 14 full professors, about ten
postdoctoral researchers and about 40 graduate students. The goal of UiL OTS
is to develop scientific expertise in the area of language, speech and their
use. The institute has intensive relations with other scientific
institutions in the field. It is penholder of the Netherlands Graduate
School in Linguistics (LOT) and participates in the Dutch graduate school in
Logic (OzsL).
UiL OTS is looking for ambitious and enthusiastic candidates for

3 graduate positions (AiO's)
(vacancy No. 68246)

who will contribute to the research of the systems that underlie language,
speech and their use. These positions are open per January/February 1, 2003.
The research of UiL OTS comprises the following seven areas: Syntax and
Semantics, Morphology & Phonology, Computational Linguistics & Logic,
Phonetics, Language Development, Language Use and Experimental
Psycholinguistics. The research programme of UiL OTS brings together
research from different strands of linguistics and related disciplines such
as logic, computer science, cognitive sciences, teaching, and the social
sciences. Within the Netherlands UiL OTS is the only research institute
which brings together all these different types of research. The research
policy of UiL OTS is focused on making full use of the added value
associated with this concentration of research.

Within the research programme of UiL OTS we strive for cooperation between
the different main disciplines of linguistics and related disciplines
(though innovative monodisciplinary research retains its important place).
Specific domains of interdisciplinary cooperation involve a wide range of
topics, varying from research into the structure of the grammatical system
(where generative and logico-semantic approaches join forces) to text
evaluation and text design; from the set-up of a systematic data-base
concerning the variation between languages, to the division of labor between
components that are involved in language and speech; from language
acquisition to language pathology. These topics are not exhaustive.

Candidates are invited to apply for one of these positions by sending in
their own research proposal in one of the fields of research of UiL OTS.
Candidates can also apply by sending in a proposal which is based on one of
the project summaries which can be found in the list of summaries.

The graduate position offers a Ph.D. training programme that leads to a
Ph.D. thesis within a period of four years. As part of their Ph.D. training
students follow graduate courses organized by the Netherlands Graduate
School of Linguistics (Landelijke Onderzoekschool Taalwetenschap (LOT))
and/or the Dutch graduate school in Logic (OzsL).

We are looking for ambitious candidates who show enthusiasm for scientific
research and an evident interest in one of the areas of the UiL OTS
programme. Eligible candidates must be in possession of a pre-doctoral
academic degree (MA), in linguistics, phonetics, psychology (specialisation
psycholinguistics especially) or some other language study with sufficient
background in linguistics. Those who will graduate shortly (but before
January 2003) can also apply.

We offer an appointment as research assistent (AiO) (under the provision of
a positive evaluation after 1 year), or, for non-Dutch candidates, entrance
to the International Ph.D. programme (conditions available upon request),
within a stimulating and innovative research environment with many
international contacts (guest researchers, international co-operation
programmes) with a Ph.D. programme which offers possibilities for advanced
education in a broad area of linguistics, state-of-the-art experimental and
informational facilities, and excellent possibilities for conferences. The
salary will be in the range of Euro 1477 (before taxes) (first year)
growing to maximally Euro 2110 (before taxes) for a full-time employment, in
conformity with the Dutch legal conditions (CAO Dutch Universities). Other
employment conditions are also conform these CAO conditions.
