The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics (Nijmegen, The
Netherlands) announces an opening for two PhD positions. In
collaboration with the F.C. Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging
(Nijmegen) the Max Planck Institute is starting a new long-term
project on multilingual language processing. The project is intended
to cover the processing of second and third languages (L2+) during
first contact, during acquisition, and in the stabilized end state of
high proficiency. Depending on the research questions, these aspects
of L2+ processing will be studied by use of different methodologies,
including reaction time experiments, gesture analysis, and
neuroimaging techniques (fMRI, ERP).
The first candidate we are looking for will conduct research on
syntactic and semantic interactions between languages in multilingual
speakers using traditional psycholinguistic approaches as well as
eye-tracking and gesture analysis. The ideal candidate should have a
background in language acquisition or bilingualism, ideally also
experience in experimental approaches to psycholinguistics or gesture
research. The candidate must have a M.A. or equivalent degree in
linguistics or psycholinguistics at the time of starting.
The second candidate we are looking for will conduct research on
syntactic processing in multilingual speakers using fMRI as well as
traditional psycholinguistic approaches. The candidate should have a
firm background in psycholinguistics, ideally also experience in fMRI
research. The candidate must have a M.A. or equivalent degree in
psycholinguistics or a related field by the time of starting.
The positions will begin in 2003 and will extend for a period of two
years with a possible extension of one year.
Please send an application letter (stating the possible starting date,
relevant research backgrounds, the CV, and two letters of
recommendation) before February 28th to
