The School of Linguistics and Language, University of Durham,
announces two PhD studentships fully funded by the Arts & Humanities
Research Board (AHRB) for 3 years full-time study beginning October
2003.

The successful candidates will work on the research project Null
Subjects and the Structure of Parametric Theory, a joint project
between the School of Linguistics and Language, University of Durham,
and the Department of Linguistics, University of Cambridge, funded by
a research grant from the AHRB. The project leaders are Anders
Holmberg (Durham), Ian Roberts and David Willis (Cambridge). The aim
of the project is to develop a theory of syntactic parameter
interaction by investigating the null-subject property and its
interaction with other properties of grammar.

One of the studentships is primarily intended for research on the
syntax of Romance languages, especially properties claimed to be
associated with the null-subject property. The other studentship is
intended for research on the relation between agreement and the
null-subject property, either in a global perspective or focusing on
some class of languages.

Both candidates are expected to have a strong background in syntactic
theory. Candidates should normally have, or be studying for, a
Master's degree in linguistics, although truly exceptional students
might be accepted without prior postgraduate training. The AHRB
restricts these awards to UK residents.
