Researcher required for work on Bologna
 Process' project
 Universities Ireland
is seeking a senior researcher to undertake
 A RESEARCH PROJECT
on the feasibility of harmonising regulations,
awarding joint degrees and providing integrated
 credit transfer arrangements between universities
 on the island of Ireland
Universities Ireland, the new body linking the nine
universities on the island of Ireland, is seeking a
senior researcher to carry out this 12 month
project in the context of the Bologna Process,
which aims for the harmonisation of higher
 education qualification systems, mutual
recognition of qualifications, and greater staff and
student mobility within the European Union. This
research project will examine these issues as they
 affect North-South inter-university
arrangements on the island of Ireland.
The study will draw on cross-border experience in
Ireland, the United Kingdom and Europe to make
detailed proposals as to how these North-South
 arrangements might be harmonised through
agreed protocols to facilitate future cross-border
courses and modules at both postgraduate and
 undergraduate levels.
The study will examine, inter alia, the regulations
governing the accreditation of courses, the award
of degrees and the measuring of credits in existing
cross-border masters courses. It will examine
 quality assurance arrangements, course
 management structures, assessment procedures,
size and content of modules, funding and appeal
 structures in these courses.
Comparable practice in and between other EU
states will also be studied, including the working of
the ERASMUS programme and the ECTS credit
 system.
This research project is worth £25,000. The
selected researcher(s) will be expected to begin
work on 2nd January 2004. The project will be
managed by the Centre for Cross Border Studies
in Armagh, Northern Ireland, which acts as the
 secretariat for Universities Ireland. University
administrators, as well as academic researchers,
 are encouraged to apply.
